Our next Vox Holloway project is Vivaldi’s Gloria and other baroque works, and starts rehearsing this next Tuesday, January 17th. The concert is on Easter Monday, April 9th, and will be our annual charity fundraising concert.
Vivaldi was for much of his working life Director of Music at the Ospedale della Pieta, a state-funded orphanage in Venice in the early 18th century, where boys learned a trade and left at 15, but girls were educated in music and had the opportunity to stay join the Ospedale’s renowned choir and orchestra. So this concert will be raising funds for a local children’s charity in Islington, working to create opportunities for marginalised children. The name and details of the charity will be confirmed next week. We are receiving sponsorship to cover the costs of (small) orchestra and soloists, so that all ticket revenue can go to the charity.
Rehearsals will be every Tuesday, 7.30pm – 9.45/10pm, at St Luke’s Church, Hillmarton Road, N7 9RE. Please come early to the first rehearsal, to register and buy your score. We will be using the New Novello Edition, and have ordered 70 copies but can get more if necessary. Cost: £6. Vivaldi’s Gloria is very beautiful, inspiring, joyful and considerably easier than Misa Criolla or the Rach Vespers.
While everyone is very welcome, we are particularly keen to increase the number of MALE singers. Please, if you are a bass or tenor, do come and join us! Please do circulate this to friends, colleagues etc who may be interested in joining us.
