Music on the Mind: a meditation on mental health
We’re thrilled to be making our Shoreditch Town Hall debut on 24 November, 2019, with our ambitious and important exploration of the issues surrounding mental health, Music on the Mind.
Hailed as “a simply fantastic project” by Stephen Fry at its 2015 premiere, Music on the Mind uses the words of writers whose creative genius is tied up with their struggles to cope with what others, or they themselves, describe as ‘madness’.
Composer Harvey Brough and librettist Justin Butcher have woven their creative testimonies into a compelling two-part piece.
The first section creates musical settings for poems by John Clare, Samuel Taylor Coleridge, Emily Dickinson and others. The second section is an interpretation of Kay Redfield Jamison’s ground-breaking memoir of living with manic depression, An Unquiet Mind.
Vox Holloway Community Choir has teamed up for the concert with the Maudsley Hospital’s Mind and Soul Choir. We will be joined by soloists Clara Sanabras and Stephan Loges, and the David Le Page Ensemble.
In the mid 19th century, while confined to the Northampton General Lunatic Asylum, John Clare penned the never-to-be-forgotten line:
“I am – yet what I am none knows nor cares”.
