Sing Vivaldi’s Gloria for charity

Our next Vox Holloway project is Vivaldi’s Gloria and other baroque works, and starts rehearsing this next Tuesday, January 17th. The concert is on Easter Monday, April 9th, and will be our annual charity fundraising concert.

Vivaldi was for much of his working life Director of Music at the Ospedale della Pieta, a state-funded orphanage in Venice in the early 18th century, where boys learned a trade and left at 15, but girls were educated in music and had the opportunity to stay join the Ospedale’s renowned choir and orchestra. So this concert will be raising funds for a local children’s charity in Islington, working to create opportunities for marginalised children. The name and details of the charity will be confirmed next week. We are receiving sponsorship to cover the costs of (small) orchestra and soloists, so that all ticket revenue can go to the charity.

Rehearsals will be every Tuesday, 7.30pm – 9.45/10pm, at St Luke’s Church, Hillmarton Road, N7 9RE. Please come early to the first rehearsal, to register and buy your score. We will be using the New Novello Edition, and have ordered 70 copies but can get more if necessary. Cost: £6. Vivaldi’s Gloria is very beautiful, inspiring, joyful and considerably easier than Misa Criolla or the Rach Vespers.

While everyone is very welcome, we are particularly keen to increase the number of MALE singers. Please, if you are a bass or tenor, do come and join us! Please do circulate this to friends, colleagues etc who may be interested in joining us.

Clara Sanabras at the Vortex

Come and hear Clara’s new Album “THE EMBLEM” live with the wonderful band who recorded it with us: Andy Hamill, Mike Outram, Harvey Brough, Chris Vatalaro plus support from Theo Bard and his band Bard.

New songs, new sounds, new collaborations

Thursday 12 of January, 8:30pm,  The Vortex, 11 Gillett Square,  N16 8AZ

www.vortexjazz.co.uk, to book online: www.wegottickets.com/event/146711

Clara Sanabras – Carried by the power of her virtuosic voice, this psychedelic-folk songstress creates an unmistakable bluesy sound with a continental urban twist. Born in France and Barcelona-raised, Sioux and Gypsy blood runs through Clara’s veins. One of the most original singer-songwriters emerging from the East London scene, she plays baroque guitar, charango and Indian harmonium – a collection as varied as her background, and she has performed at many prestigious international festivals, including Glastonbury, London Jazz Festival and Womad. “Her sound sits richly somewhere between Camille, Mariza and Joanna Newsom – a gorgeous place to be” (Uncut) www.clarasanabras.com

Plus support from Bard. Led by Theo Bard, old folk hits a new groove as this band of troubadours collide in a rich harmony of guitar, accordion and clarinet. Home is the Woodburner community folk club deep in Hackney’s underground, but their sound resonates far beyond. The group will be performing music from the shortly to be released new album. “Troubadours Bard blend a love of traditional songs in songs infused with astute observations of modern life” (Time Out). www.wearebard.com

Halfway through

A live update. We have sung at the Whittington and Lennox House and are variously en route for the Vine. A large and mostly silent crowd are streaming away from the Arsenal around Finsbury Park. Game over for the Gunners? Not for us!
